Netting is a method of bird removal (as such) that can be used against many species of birds — pigeons, starlings, sparrows, etc. There are different sizes or gauges of netting, and different sized birds will need different sized netting.
If you use the wrong size netting for pigeons, you'll encounter problems. Netting that has a very small space between the wires can be missed and flown into, trapping and probably killing the bird. Netting that has a very large gauge or space between the material will still allow birds to pass right through. If the netting is too small, once again, it can act as a platform for the birds to land on, especially when it has been fixed horizontally.

Pigeons need netting that is around 2 inches or 50mm. This means the squares are 2 inches or 50mm across, between the strips material. The material is another important factor, as there are two main types you can buy. Just like everything else in pest removal there are disadvantages and advantages for both. Nylon netting is one option, but this isn't very long-lasting or as durable as the second option — galvanised steel wiring. There are now different options as far as nylon netting is concerned, too, each with different strengths ... and weaknesses.
Where should you use pigeon netting?
Netting is best used to dispel birds from a large area and not a small one. It is a relatively inexpensive option, and that makes it a popular choice among local governments and organizations, particularly when trying to protect older buildings. The netting is virtually unseen from ground level and is the most aesthetically pleasing option.
Agricultural land owners regularly use netting to protect larger areas from pigeons and other birds, and you will also find it commonly used in outdoor public spaces, such as bus or train stations, as well as around industrial buildings — warehouses, etc.
When shouldn't you use bird netting for pigeons?
If pigeons are regularly landing on a window sill or ledge, you'll probably find that bird spike strips are a cheaper and effort-friendly method of prevention. Installing netting can be a laborious task, and you will need to return to the area to remove any trapped/caught birds or animals, and also to check it over after periods of bad weather.
Smaller areas are better protective with a range of other approaches, including using dummies and decoys, repellents and deterrents, light or sound devices, and spikes.
